So I was reading this insipid piece on I09 and it got me thinking: what would I, a lifelong Star Wars fan, like to see from Star Wars' future in the wake of the travesty of The Last Jedi. So I thought that I would, well, give it some thought.
1) Trash the Solo garbage and give us Dr. Aphra
- So by now it's not even a surprise to Disney that Solo is going to bomb. I propose that they not let it bomb.... cancel it. I don't care if it's already in the can or how much it costs to make it: it will do more damage to a series that TLJ has already dealt a mortal blow to. Stop hurting the franchise. Know when to fold. Turn your attention to one of the best new characters in the Star Wars universe: Dr. Aphra. She's got it all; she's Asian, bi-sexual, a scoundrel whose moral compass never points away from her own benefit... and she comes with two delightfully murderous droids! Aphra the anti-hero could be a shot in the arm for a tired universe and she even had a great run in the comics opposite of a ruthless Darth Vader who tried (and for all he knows succeeded) to kill her. I09 and I agree that Dr. Aphra would do nothing but benefit the Star Wars franchise so make it happen Disney!
2) Darth Talon
- Another thing I09 pined for was a female main villain and an exploration of the Dark side... and Darth Talon could be both. Even though she is one of the Legacy era (137 years After the Battle of Yavin) Sith Disney could easily retcon her to an earlier era; even during the Sith domination of the Galaxy before the Republic. Watching her training as a Sith assassin and her evolution into a powerful villain would be a fascinating change from the Jedi dogma, even if the movie only set her up to eventually fall against some Jedi hero.
3) Bring Back Star Wars 1313
- Either as a game or as a TV show (yo, Netflix, you listening?) Practically every fan was clamoring for this; an exploration into the seedy, crime-ridden underbelly of Galactic era Coruscant. It doesn't have to be about Boba Fett, in fact it shouldn't be about Boba Fett. Hasn't Rebels and Rogue One proven that you can have an original Star Wars story with original characters and have is succeed?
4) The Courage to Reshoot The Last Jedi
- Admittedly this is the most fantastical entry here, but c'mon Disney; you had the balls to throw out the EU. Have the courage to admit that things like Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and The Last Jedi were mistakes; decanonize that shit, and give us a coherent replacement that doesn't just throw out the new trilogy with the bathwater. I get that Rian Johnson was trying to murder Star Wars we grew up with in order to make way for Star Wars for Millennials but the two don't have to be mutually exclusive. Abrams already knocked the Heroes of the Original Trilogy down a few pegs but Johnson put them in a shallow, unmarked grave (well, every one except the actress who is actually in a grave) and Disney needs to step up and realize that just letting whichever indie director sucks the best dick write the future of Star Wars is a goddamn mistake. They need a loremaster who writes the shit and prevents rogue directors from starting a catfight with rival directors of previous entries.
5) Give Us More Star Wars Without the Jedi
- As cool as Samurai Space Wizards are, and yes they are goddamn cool, Rogue One was a big hit for the franchise with even lifelong fans like me putting it next to Empire as the best Star Wars out there. You don't have to have Jedi to tell a great story in this universe. Set in the Galactic Empire era a tale of Firefly like companions just trying to make their way in the galaxy would be great. Fuck, let Whedon do it. He could call the goddamn ship Serenity and I would still be all over it.
6) We Need that Goddamn Kenobi Movie Now
- What might redeem Star Wars after TLJ and Solo? If anything can it's a movie, starring Ewan McGregor, about Obi Wan's time on Tattoonie. We already know from the comics that he tangled with Jabba's crime syndicate and clashed with Uncle Owen about how he watched over Luke from afar but showing Obi Wan, out in the desert, just Seven Samuraing his way through his exile would be fucking awesome. I wouldn't even be opposed to a painful love-lost story with memories of Satine or a failed apprentice tale... just something.
Well, that's all I have for now. Star Wars needs something. Disney has let it wither on the vine. They took it, worried everyone, made a few questionable decisions, and then made everyone hopeful with TFA and Rebels, then reassured fans with Rogue One only to dash the future of the franchise with TLJ. Solo is destined to fail. If Disney wants Star Wars to have a future they need to get their poop in a group and arrest these mistakes and do something that makes both old and new fans happy.
The two do not have to be mutually exclusive.
