So here it is Christmas Day and once again I am stuck at work thinking about all the gaming I am doing and what I am behind on. So I thought I'd take a look at where I am, what I'm playing, and what is just around the corner.
Released February 14th (Bloody Valentine's Day) For Honor has consistently monopolized my gaming all year long; and for good reason. For all their flaws and bungles Ubisoft remains dedicated to providing content for this game. The 2017 People's Choice for Fighting Game of the Year sure has had its share of problems, but let's face an undeniable fact: I have put Skyrim-like hours into this game in 2017. I have logged in and done my dailies every single day of the year; even when I was out of town on a dive trip! Totaled that is over 471 hours! (Actually surpassing Skyrim!) Competition is fierce; For Honor is now known as one of the biggest noob-killer games in existence. The skill threshold is mammoth and Ubi isn't taking it easy; input-reading level 3 Murderbots now flood every mode of play. You are either good at this game or you don't play it long. My prediction: For Honor is fast on it's way to earning a Dark Souls reputation and many Dark Souls enthusiasts already flood the Knight Faction. There is no end of For Honor in sight for me; I simply love playing. With Dedicated Servers on the horizon, a holiday-themed event, and an announced upcoming event for Valentine's Day to celebrate the game's birthday there is still a ton to do; not to mention the rumors about Year 2 and what new heroes that year might bring. In Year 1 we got 6 new Heroes and 6 new maps and each event brings unique gear. All in all For Honor is about the best post-launch supported game I have ever played.
Everyone's favorite DLC expansion of all time is still on my now-playing list but I don't get to play it often. Usually when I can spare time away from For Honor my wife is on the PC. Blood and Wine is not my favorite of Geralt's adventures.... yet. I qualify that because it is the Witcher and you just never know what is coming. Hearts of Stone was pretty impressive and The Witcher 3 was incredible but, after 3 games and 1 expansion I admit: I am Witcher fatigued. I even stopped reading the novels just because I need a bit of a break from Geralt. I do want to finish though so I'll be back to this as soon as I can be.
AssOrigins is the other big monopolizer of my time, mostly because I started it, got hooked, and I don't wanna give up mid-way through. Bayek is a good protagonist and the whole world is wonderfully realized... even if a special event gave me gear from Final Fantasy XV and a Chocobo mount! (I cannot bring myself to use these.) This is also a big hit with my children, who all love the portrayal of Ptolemaic Egypt. It's a very different AssCreed game with a leveling system that is not really my favorite, but it does help force you to be intelligent about your approach to situations.
I don't play this as much as I probably should. After all I bought it on preorder based on how much fun I had in the Beta with Starfighter Assault. I am not, however, having as much fun with the full game. I try to log in daily for my crate but many times I don't even play a match. Partially The Last Jedi has soured this experience for me. It's hard to care about Star Wars anymore.
It's been compared to Shadow of Mordor but the War of the Chosen expansion for XCOM 2 holds a lot of promise. I recently acquired the game and all the DLC so I am looking forward to playing through this one of the 3rd time. Once I start I doubt I'll be able to stop; if history is any indicator XCOM has the power to break For Honor's hold on me.
I just started this last night so it is still in the same mission as the demo I played on GOG but I love this game. It also has a lot of potential to draw my attention... at least until the difficulty sobers me up. I like to set it to use the Japanese voices so I haven't even heard the english cast yet but so far everything about this game (except for the camera) appeals to me.
Called the "greatest dumpster fire I have ever played" Elex is a blend of Skyrim and Fallout with ALL the bugs that Bethesda usually includes without all the pesky name recognition. Still though this looks right up my alley. I have a soft spot for imperfect games and, provided it is fun, I will probably end up loving this one. I am not in too big of a hurry to get to it though, with everything in front of it I don't mind this taking the backburner.
The gigaton bombshell that Catherine is coming to PS4 and Vita (there is a god!) is not only fantastic news but enters the must (re)buy category immediately. Even if the SJW fuzzie-wuzzies all suspect that Rin is a tranny based on Vincent's shock when she shows up naked in front of him. Maybe this is true, but I couldn't help but notice that she also wears something very similar to a sailor fuku so it could be that Vincent is shocked because a High School girl just stuck her box in his face.... or it could be that Vincent is fucking Japanese and the sudden appearance of a totally naked woman can create an element of surprise in their culture. (gasp!) Anyway I'll definitely replay this again... and maybe even get into the competitive scene. I was never the best climber but I always loved this cult hit.
Anyway, thanks for reading. That's my State of Gaming for Christmas Day 2017. What are you guys playing or looking forward to playing?
