So, hilariously, there's a civil war in the Knight subreddit right now. The issue? Mount Ignis.
See that Volcano? It sits in one of the territories in the Faction War; the eternal struggle between the Knights, Samurai, and Vikings that takes place in tandem with For Honor's matches. Every match you complete grants you assets, i.e. soldiers, to devote to one of For Honor's 87 (presently. Periodically they add more) territories. In these 87 territories there are 3 Castles (bonus to Troops/Assets,) 3 Mills (Bonus to XP,) and 3 Forges (bonus to loot dropped at the end of the match,) one set for each Faction. Keep in mind that the Faction War meta-game runs across all three platforms constantly. You do not get a choice to participate; if you choose not to deploy assets the game spreads them evenly across all Faction territories. Deploying in a select territory can help your Faction hold the line or increase territory. A full season in For Honor lasts 10 weeks with the Rounds lasting 2 weeks each, for a total of 5 rounds per Season. The Faction War map is updated every 6 hours. The winners of the Season gain various rewards including gear, steel (money,) and cosmetics.
Note: the volcano does not sit on one of these strategic points.
By now I would estimate probably something in the neighborhood of 30-50% of For Honor players regularly visit the For Honor Reddit page and its related subreddits. The developers are very active there and it serves as a primary mode of communication between the team at Ubisoft and the playerbase. While the main page stays relatively on topic there three main subredits; The Knights, Vikings, and Samurai, have distinctive cultures. We Vikings tend to be more serious and focused. We like to post links to Viking metal, talk about specific Viking heroes, and yell "Skål!" a lot. The Weebs like to talk about anime and complain about being disrespected, but the Knights... well the Knights are all about memes. Funny pictures, videos set to music, which emotes you can spam to be trollish and silly, and screaming Deus Vult at every single opportunity. They even made a Deus Vult bot that repeats "Deus Vult" every time someone else says it... this is what the Clankers are all about... or at least what most of them are about.
At some point the Knights realized that Mt. Ignis sat in their native territory... then they realized that they could call it the "Vultcano." The Samurai, a bunch of Weebish trolls themselves, then called it "Mt. Fuji" and started devoting a lot of their energy to taking, and holding, the volcano. Just to shine them on we Vikings dubbed it the "Vikano" but the reality was it sits on the Clanker/Weeb border and we have to push, and hold, quite a bit of territory to get to it, so we collectively stopped caring.
Now each Faction posts warplans. It just so happens that the Weebs took theirs to their Discord, where the playerbase drops to maybe 20% of total players, and the Clankers just stopped posting them in favor of more memes. But we Viks not only post a clear, understandable set of warplans to follow, we tend to follow them... and we deploy assets more than either other Faction. For that reason the Vikings, the smallest Faction by number of actual players, have been kicking TONS of ass lately. We took Season 4 handily and we dominated the off-season. We just smoked the Knights in Round 1 of Season 5. We appear unstoppable.
Why?
Because of the Vultcano.
You see those deployment numbers? That's 37 million assets deployed on the Vultcano; a tile with ZERO bonuses on it. It became a Clanker meme that Mt. Ignis must be defended at all costs. Earlier this week we Vikings had their Mill, their Forge, and their castle, which is just two tiles away, while these imbeciles dumped 22 MILLION on that fucking volcano. We no longer have to defeat the Knights... they can do that on their own. The Weebs aren't much better; with the disarray and confusion resulting from taking their warplans to their Discord they are already disjointed in their deployment but, to compound matters, a good number of Weebs still want to take and hold "Mt. Fuji." This fuels the Clanker's madness all the more.
This situation has resulted in nothing less than a civil war on the Knight subreddit. Many are now calling their brethren "heretics" if they deploy on the Vultcano and I, as the Viking subreddit mod, welcomed SEVEN defectors yesterday alone... and not just from the Knights! Weebs are coming to us as well, swearing fealty to the Viking Faction due to our level-headedness and focus on the actual Faction War.
Normally getting more troops would be a good thing, but For Honor has a balancing mechanic; one of the reasons why the Vikings are so successful is because we are so small; our asset contribution gets a big bonus over the more populous Knight (#1) and Samurai (#2) Factions. With a sudden flood of Clanker and Weeb converts our asset contributions are going to plunge! Our success may lead to our downfall.
If the Vulcanophiles win the Clanker civil war and even more Knights defect to the North then, ultimately, the Clankers may end up the smallest, and therefore most potent Faction.
Which will probably mean the Vultcano may one day see in excess of 75 million assets deployed and the goddamn Weebs might win season 6!
