Got this today as an extra reward for backing the Kickstarter for Bard's Tale IV; incidentally the first thing I ever kickstarted that STILL isn't ready to release. I played a little of the one on PS3 I think... or was it PS2? I've heard of the Bard's Tale series, but I've never played it. Seems it has quite a following. It has a nice PC RPG feel to it, and I've read the Bard's Tale games are quite charming.

Which year do you think was the best for gaming?
For me personally, I'd say 2008. That's because of Lost Odyssey,Persona 4 and Valkyria Chronicles. Lost Odyssey and Persona 4 are both in my top 10 favorite games of all time. Valkyria Chronicles is one of the most innovative RPGs I've played.
It also had the release of Tales of Symphonia 2 ( which many people dislike, but it's actually my favorite Tales game).
2008 also had the epic Metal Gear Solid 4, and some fun solid games Gears of War 2, Fable 2 and Little Big Planet.

SudekiIt is a Japanese style RPG, that was developed by a Western developer named Climax, and was realeased for Xbox in 2004. The devs went out of their way to make the world of Sudeki look as colorful as they possibly could, and added flashy special attacks, kinda like what you'd see in a JRPG. It also tried to go for a JRPG style of narrative, being very character-driven, and it's gameplay was quite fun for it's time, 2 characters used hack n slash style, and 2 characters used FPS style combat(you could switch the character you were controlling). It's battle system is similar to the gambit system of FF12, in which the party members will perform autocommands based on what you tell them to do, while still being directly in control of 1 character. What makes the game memorable to me is it's world, which is so colorful and full of detail. It's story could have been better though, full of cliches and lack of any real character development. The game is now available on Steam, so maybe I'll give it another playthrough one day. Jade Empire
My favorite Bioware game, it's an RPG with lots of Asian influences. It's set in a world inspired by Chinese and Japanese mythology, and the battle system is like a much faster version of Dragon Age's battle system, because it goes for a Kung Fu feel. I think it's battle system is very clever because it tries to make you use a balance of different abilities, whether it be using weapons, summoning demons, or special attacks. All of these abilities require chi, so the game encourages you to use unarmed combat often as using weapons will actually deplete chi. Being a Bioware RPG, there is branching character conversations, and you can create romances with Asian women, and you can choose to be good or bad.

We've seen more gems from the past get rereleased on Steam, or get HD remasters. However, there's still some gems out there, that I hope to play again that are yet to receive the same treatment. Please Note : I'm not going to include Lost Odyssey or The Last Story, since I've spoken about both games a million times. Blue Dragon
An old school JRPG , created by Final Fantasy's creator Sakaguchi, BD has all the things you'd expect to find in an old school JRPG , which includes turn-based combat, towns and a world map to explore, and it's quiet a lengthy adventure too. What I like about this game is the detail put into it, you can enter people's homes and see lots of everyday items inside and outside of their home, because you will also see extra details like a water well and fences on people's farms, and the towns are quaint and colorful. In fact, the game has some of the most beautiful locations I've seen in 7th gen games, such as places with beautiful waterfalls and gardens with butterlies.The story isn't memorable, but it does enough to make you care about what happens next, and I like how the story doesn't try to be overpowering, because the game lets it's charm and heart be the foucs. Skies of Arcadia
This is one of the reasons people are hoping for a Gamecube or Dreamcast rerelease. Another imaginative JRPG from the 6th gen. It has old school trademarks , while being set high in the sky, amongst floating continents, thus people navigate using airships , and it adds a nice new dimension to world map travel as you can increase or decrease altitude to find various places. For people who love Valkyria Chronicles, the main character in the game is Vyse from Valkyria Chronicles. Panzer Dragoon Saga
Regarded as the best Saturn exclusive, it was one of the most refreshing JRPGs from the 5th gen. I love it's atmosphere, which has a dark and wasteland type feel, and a story that focuses heavily on multiple characters. It's battle system has a good blend of turn-based and real-time elements, and allows you to use a dragon with various abilities, hence the battle system is a fairly tactical one. Otogi 1 and 2
Created by Software (developers of the Souls games) Otogi 1 and 2 are hack n slash action/adventure games released for Xbox, and both have a beautiful yet dark atmosphere and combat that looks elegant and feels fluid. If these games were released on a Sony or Nintendo system, they probably would have gotten a lot more love, since it seems to me the Xbox was primarily a shooter gamer's system.

It's an astoundingly abrupt 'the end' and smash cut to credits, with no resolution to any of the late-game stuff that happens. Also, something I'll always remember, the further into the game you got, the skimpier the clothing for the girls got. Particularly Buki, whose battle costume eventually devolves into a metal thong.
It also had some weird stuff. At one point lat-game you had an escort mission where you had to protect Elco's wife while travelling the countryside. If she gets killed, Elco puts a gun to his head and fucking commits suicide. I remember being surprised by that.

I used overpowered Elco and used him in FPS mode and blasted enemies from a safe distance, to the point the battles became very easy. But the game stupidly tries to make silly reasons why you cannot use your entire party for some boss fights. I was annoyed when I couldn't use Elco for the final boss, for no good reason at all, the party let Tal take on the final boss alone, when my overpowered Elco would have blasted the final boss to bits. I remember Buki wearing less clothing as she became more powerful, and she was a fairly generic character, just a cute, blue-haired bubbly girl whose mommy won't let her go out on adventures. I love the detail in the world designs, such as seeing villages inhabited by animal humaoids, and the robot city looked quite cool.

Broken does sort of describe it, since with Ailish and Elco you could just cheese combat by constantly walking backwards while shooting. IF any enemy looks like it's going to hit you or do a big attack, you can just trigger your own special to slow down time.
Ailish was the one with mommy issues (and the one who, upon opening a travel chest, says 'Prizes and Surprises!', which is something that's burned into my brain). Buki was the cat girl who Elco sort of flirts with a bit, despite him being married. Also, technically, Elco ends up sort of being an accidental villain since he's inadvertedly caused every single bad thing that happened in the game.
The final boss is exactly one of the issues I hated about the entire ending - a whole bunch of big plot revelations happen and, before they're explored or dealt with in any way, you're thrown to the final boss, and you can only use Tal (which means all your levelling and upgrading the other character as pointless). And since it's a 1 on 1 battle, you can just constantly spam special attacks (provided you have enough items to constantly refill SP).

September 2018 marks these anniversaries10 years ago, Cross Edge, an overpriced and shitty JRPG was released, and I hated it, but I bought it because I had waited a long time for there to be a JRPG to play on the PS3. 20 years ago, Spyro the Dragon was released, and it's HD makeover will be coming soon. Fallout 2 was also released in September 1998. 30 years ago, Super Mario Bros 2 came to the U.S

While I was never a fan of MJ's music, I did like one of his songs, which is Smooth Criminal. Hence, when I see something about MJ on TV/Youtube, the song Smooth Criminal comes into my head, and it makes me member this game. It was a fun game back in the early 90's.

It's price of 100 USD is a bit much IMO, especially since the NES classic oriignally sold at a price of around 60 USD, and also because the NES classic came with more games, even the SNES classic has more games. It's 1/3 the price of a PS4, and the PS4 will allow you to play most of the great PS One games.
