I am a big fan of the film Gettysburg. Not just because I'm a bit of a Civil War buff but because the movie did a good job of not painting the North as the great white knight heroes and the South as evil moustache twirling black hats fighting to keep slaves. It had good (albeit it dramatized obviously) historically accurate representations of the people, places and events of the battle. It's also got a really great musical score. It's tough to watch this movie too often as its a bit long and has a lot of sweeping camera shots and such that can unfortunately make me sleepy in the right circumstances. I never have gotten around to watching the prequel to this, Gods and Generals. I like how Gettysburg shows the Southerners as being polite, and the way it shows the Virginian generals actually cared about their soldiers because they took pride in Virginia. It explained how Northern generals/officers used their soldiers as cannon fodder, and how close the North came to losing the war because the ''educated Northerners'' were outsmarted by the Southern generals. I like how it breaks down stereotypes, such as showing Southern General Armistead being interested in evolution, contrary to the stereotype that southerners don't tolerate anything non-Christian, and the war was inevitable since it wasn't about slavery, it was about political games. As Longstreet said, ''we should have freed the darkies first, and then announce secession from the North, so the North can't bring up the darkies, darkies, darkies all the time''. I've watched Gods and Generals, it's battle scenes are dull, but it does a good job of showing how incompetent many of the Northern generals were, and the way they underestimated the South. It centers mainly on general Jackson, but also shows Chamberlain and his brother, as well as Hancock (who tries to point out the strategic flaws of the other Northern generals, but they're too arrogant to listen to him).

Watched Annihilation. I thought it was ok. Main story is good, but the characters are annoying. It's basically like Lovecraftian horror meets psychological disintegration. The cinematography is nice, and the Helplessly Hoping 1969 song from Stephen Stills makes things relaxing. Could have been great, but some of the characters are really unlikable. 6/10 score from me.

Watched the Korean movie ''Hansel and Gretel''. It's OK, but I wouldn't watch it again. It's about a guy who crashes his car near the forest. When he wakes up, he is lured to a house by a girl, and meets her ''family'' in there, but something seems off about that family, as they try very hard to give the impression they're always a very happy and tight-knit family. Also, there is no phone or internet reception in that house. I won't say anything else, except creepy stuff starts happening and twists come into the story. It's more psychological thriller than actual horror, and worth watching one time, because it's different. So where does Hansel and Gretel fit in? Other than Koreans "borrowing" existing shit again, are any of the characters sporting German names? Why?

SPOILERS Kinda like in the tale of Hansel and Gretel, in which their parents abandon them in the forest. The children in this movie are orphans as well. Only thing is there is more than just 2 children.

Watched a film adaptation of Black Butler. I don't have the time to watch anime series much anymore, so I skipped to just watching the film. It's kinda like Edwardian culture mixed with Neo Noir, and is about how a Queen controls the world, and an orphan who works as a watchdog for the Queen is seeking vengeance against those who killed her parents, so she summons a demon, and you learn about various plots and conspiracies. Not the best story, and felt like just another action flick, just with a more unique setting. Barely watchable, mainly because I like the neo noir atmosphere.

OH! I got Black Butler confused with Bible Black... I've wanted to give Bible Black a try, since I have an eroge collection... That happens to be one I haven't seen; came out during what I call "the death of hentai in America." Early anime was a good percentage Hentai here, and it was glorious, but none was greater than the grandaddy of them all...

Saturday night random strangers who had heard the legends about "Demon Dick" showed up to see it. They rarely left disappointed.

Watched Kotsutsubo, which is a Japanese horror movie. It's not scary at all, not one bit. It's about a group of highschool girls who want to exact revenge on a teacher whom has been touching them, so they acquire bones that are cursed , hence anyone who consumes the bones internally will die a horrible death. The girls come up with a plan to put the bone powder in the drink of the teacher whom has been bad to them, but it leads to dire consequences. I found the movie entertaining, because I like how sneaky and pretty the girls are, and when they were putting the bone powder in that teacher's drink, they all had mischievous smiles on their face, and comical music was used for that scene to lighten it up. Even when Asian women have an evil facial expression, they are still pretty. But, since it's not scary, and the attempted horror scenes are few and far between, I must say it's a below average horror movie, but an entertaining story in general. The movie does have some very gorey scenes, such as seeing curse victims missing their lower torso, or missing limbs, and ghost scenes, but the movie doesn't really build up any suspense leading to these scenes.

Since we don't use GIO anymore, I'll import some of my blogs on there to here. Mah Nakorn(English name is 'Citizen Dog').Mah Nakorn is a Thai movie and it's a romantic comedy which doesn't take itself too seriously. The story is about a man named 'Pod' whom moves to the city from the country and he tries working at various places and notices how Bangkok people have tails(it's a joke about Bangkok people being conceited)and he falls for a pretty young woman named 'Jin' who also comes from the country but Jin is an environmentalist and she admires a foreign(western)environmentalist/hippie guy and she wants to read one of his books about saving the environment but the book is in english and she can't read english so she tries to learn english by putting her ear next to the wall of a class room where Thai students are learning English.Pod likes to ride a motorbike taxi to work but his taxi rider becomes a zombie after he is hit in the head by a helmet when it was raining helmets. When Pod visits the country,he realized he became so used to the fast-paced city life that being in the country felt everything happened so much slower it looked like everything was done in slow motion(it's a joke about how Thai rural people are more lackadaisy and do things much slower than city people).A teddy bear named 'Thongchai' enters the story and Thongchai is a smoking, drinking, swearing Teddy bear who goes to bars and Thong Chai is linked to the story because his owner is a bratty little girl who skips school and plays video games all day and Pod gives her a taxi ride to places(because Pod took a job as a taxi driver).Jin is so determined to save the environment, she collects so many plastic bottles until she creates a mountain of plastic bottles in the middle of the city.Pod continues trying to win Jin's heart and is even prepared to help her save the environment if it will make her happy.Pod tries to show Jin that he may not be a famous environmentalist eco fighter like that hippie guy,but he is a good guy who will treat her good and will do whatever he can to make her happy.Mah Nakorn is a movie I can watch countless times and it always cheers me up. K-PAXK-PAX is a story about a man who claims to be an alien named 'Prot' and he comes from a planet named K-PAX which is 1000 light years away and he has no indisputable proof except he knows how to heal people,he was able to show the orbital patterns of star systems which no other astronomer could and he could give detailed accounts about K-PAX's societal structure, culture, animals, the moons that surround K-PAX etc. Some people believe he's an alien, some people don't and the movie lets you come to your own conclusion as to whether he is or isnt'.Prot claims his race(K-PAXians)are millions of years ahead of humanity in terms of technological and societal development and he explains how the society on his planet is much more peaceful than humanity and don't have things such as famine, war, murder, heavy pollution etc. and he explains how other alien races look at humans as being a stupid, violent, primitive race. Casshern.Casshern is a Japanese movie about how the world is extremely polluted after a massive war and much of the human population have disease so scientists use special types of cells which can be used to make humans be no longer be affected by the horrible diseases and those cells also make humans become more powerful and can even bring dead people back to life.A man named Tetsuya who was killed is brought back to life but his soul doesn't want to be inside his body anymore because he thinks all humans do is kill and destroy and the movie is very philosophical. The woman who loves Tetsuya tries to explain to him that she needs him and Tetsuya needs to use his special fighting abilities to fight off bad guys. The movie has beautiful music, beautiful cinematography and awesome action scenes Warm Water Under a Red BridgeWarm Water is a Japanese movie about an unhappily married man who's wife treats him badly and he separates from her for a while because she wants him to go out and find a job and he goes to so little rural town and meets a beautiful woman who has a strange condition which makes her need to have sex a lot(Yes you read that part correctly). She needs to have a sex a lot to release water that builds up inside her and during sex the water will come out of a certain part of her body(the same part the woman uses during intercouse)... The man believes a treasure might be buried in her house and the man becomes close with this woman because she treats him better than his wife and he tries to protect her from bad guys who think they can use her as a sex object because she is in debt to them. The MythThe Myth is a Hong Kong Film which stars Jackie Chan and incase you're thinking 'oh no,it's another generic martial arts action film' I'd like to tell you that the story is much deeper than that and is quite emotional and beautifully presented. The movie will show 2 stories, one will be the story of the past life of a character Jacky Chan plays as who's a Chinese war general named 'Meng' who was trying to protect a Korean princess(named Ok So) and he fell in love with her the other story is Jacky Chan play as an archaeologist named 'Jack' who travels to India and to search for a material which can create anti-gravity and trying to stop it falling into the wrong hands and develops a crush on a pretty Indian woman.Even when you see the story from Jack's perspective he still has dreams about his past life as Meng and being with Ok So and how they were in love and trying to survive together.Jack discovers Ok So could still be alive because she drank an elixer which gives whoever drinks it immortality. The music for the movie is beautiful. Man from EarthMan from Earth is about a man named John who tells his friends during a farewell gathering that he is tens of thousands of years old and he's been alive since the paleolithic(caveman)times and he stopped ageing tens of thousands of years ago.He has no proof of this except the people admit John looks like he hasn't aged even since they first met him(10 years ago).John says he moves from place to place every 10 years when people start to get suspicious that he doesn't age.John also has ancient relics and paintings that would be worth a fortune and has bottles of Johnny Walker Green that he can share as if they're plentiful.I found the movie stimulating because John talked about what his life was like during many time-periods in human history in great detail, such as what life was like for him as a caveman and talked about caveman's evolution into modern man,and also talked about how he met Buddha 2500 years ago what things were like back then and what Buddha was like and the influence it had on him and on the world and he gives accounts of the birth of christianity which are very different to what the Christian religion says today(which makes the movie very controversial and somewhat hated)and he talked about the renaissance period and explained how it's painful for him to watch his friends and family die around him.I am glad the movie doesn't try to use corny CGI's to show the time periods deep in the past and it lets you use your imagination from John's detailed accounts.John has feelings for a woman but tells her he is scared to be with her because he won't age. Pad Thai Bride(Thai name is Jao Saao Pad Thai)Pad Thai is a popular Thai dish and the movie Pad Thai Bride is amount a pretty Thai woman named 'Pet' who loses her job and her father wants her to find a man to marry and a TV show pay Pet's family a lot of money if she agrees to marry a man who can eat the most amount of Pad Thai during a Pad Thai eating contest that will be held over many days.Pet is unhappy about this but is kinda forced into doing it and she realizes she has feelings for a guy named 'Surachat' who seems he would do anything for her but by then it's too late and the Pad Thai eating contest has been organized,so Surachat enters the Pad Thai eating contest and tries to win the contest so Pet will be able to marry him. Vanilla skyVanilla Sky is about a man named David who is a billionaire and seems to have a perfect life.He owns a magazine company and he barely does any work and lets the people who work for him do all the work while he becomes richer and often he cruises around New York all day in his ferrari or Mustang with his best friend and sleeps with many models.Until one day he meets the woman of his dreams and realizes he hasn't been truly happy all this time but after getting into a horrible accident which causes his face to become smashed up and scarred, his life falls apart and weird things begin happening to his reality and I won't say anymore because they'll be spoilers but the story will blow your mind. Code 46Code 46 is a sci fi movie, set around the year 2040.Genetic engineering and cloning have become so common that inbreeding starts becoming a problem so laws are put in place which means every couple have to check if they're more than 50% genetically related before they can have have sexual relations. Also, the rich people live in high tech cities that are bordered off from the poor people who live in wastelands.Much of the world's population has become dry and desert-like due to a depleted ozone layer that even Shanghai looks like a desert now and people try to stay indoors during the day to avoid the high levels of UV and come out at night. To enter cities, you need special types of visas called 'Papelles'' and the visa requirements are quite strict. Many people who live outside of the cities(in the wastelands)are desperate to get into a city because people who live outside of a city have to come outside during the day when the UV levels are high to look for food or ways to earn income. The main story is about a man named William who works for the government and is investigating forged papelles and meets a woman who is creating fake papelles and falls in love with her, even though William is already married and I'll let you discover how the story turns out. The Last EmperorIs a story about the last Emperor of China named Pu Yi who was made a prisoner inside his own palace walls so he could be used as a puppet emperor but was given a life of luxury which included being able to have 2 beautiful wives. The story shows how he dealt with the Japanese occupation of China and the communist revolution in China.Pu Yi even sided with the Japanese because they recognized the Chinese monarchy'S hereditary rights, where as on the other-hand he was merely a puppet to the Chinese aristocrats and the monarchy's future in a Chinese controlled China was uncertain.Pu Yi was forced to leave his palace which allowed him to be free of the palace walls for the first time but it had consequences that I will let you discover for yourself.Remember,he had 2 wives and even after he left the palace walls and lived with the Japanese he tried to keep both of his wives and refused to accept it was seen as morally unacceptable to have more than 1 wife in a modernized world.I like the movie because it shows Pu Yi's childhood and what it was like being a puppet emperor and the corruption happening within the kingdom and how little power the emperor actually had,and what his life was like as an adult and the having to adapt to big changes such as going from a puppet emperor in a Chinese-controlled China to an emperor with a lot of power in a Japanese-controlled China.
