I've picked up Ni No Kuni 2, The first Ni No Kuni IS one of the most charming games ever, but I need to get through a backlog of 428 and Trails of Cold Steel first.

428 has an interesting story, with goofy and dark elements. It uses real life actors, including beautiful Japanese women.

To elaborate more on 428: Shibuya Scramble, it's a visual novel, that uses real-life actors. It's story starts off with a kidnapping and money for ransom, but it's developing into something more complex, with numerous characters fitting into the story intricately. Other thingsthat make it different to other visual novels (besides the visual style), it has a unique way in how it handles story arcs, where you can switch between story arcs and redo choices anytime, without having to make many saves . So you can experiment with choices, thus the game has over 80 bad endings. It also has a story jump feature, where you need to find the right time to make a character jump into the arc of another character's story. However, since it lets you constantly alter the timeline, I've found myself having to redo a fair bit of game time, which is frustrating. It's story presentation feels like a goofy 90's action series at time, but darker elements come into it often.

428 Shibuya Scramble has plot twists that have caught me off guard , and they make the story complex, interesting and emotional. Being a game that I haven't seen anybody talking about, I didn't set my expectations too highly, nor did I have plot elements revealed beforehand.I came into the story blindly, not know what to expect, and it's turned out to be very entertaining. This has happened to me often, which is I play a game or watch a movie that I have no idea what it's about, and I enjoy it more so , than trying to play a game or watch a movie that everyone is raving about and which people have already revealed plot elements before I get to experience them, and I lose the surprise factor. Sometimes, a great story experience comes from not knowing that to expect.

Well, that and I'm trying to not grow my backlog.

Got 100% of the trophies in What Remains of Edith Finch. It's a disturbing story, but artistic and somewhat spiritual at the same time. Worth playing, but glad I didn't pay much money for it (PS Plus month's subscription).

Ni No Kuni 2 has been fun so far. It's very imaginative. The characters have the studio Ghibli style, (which is charming), and the battle system is fluid. I don't like how the world map goes for a more realistic style though. I prefer the cartoony, colorful style of .the first Ni No Kuni game. #NiNoKuni2

Ni No Kuni 2 has some RTS elements. It's story scenes are still stunning, despite the more realistic artstyle during gameplay not being as pleasant as the colorful world of the first NNK. Here's some battle system footage early on in Ni No Kuni 2. It's a lot like a Tales game. I prefer the more turn-based influences of the first NNK. But the battle system is fun nonetheless. R1 to use a ranged weapon. And the moogle-like Higgledies automatically cast spell circles to heal your characters or give them boosts.

I'm trying to enjoy Ni No Kuni 2, but it has waaay too much backtracking. I hate when games do that, especially when its not particularly interesting. If a game is going to ask us to retread our steps it better have a good reason for it and we better not just be running through the same low level encounters only now with more levels and gear.

If a game is going to ask us to retread our steps it better have a good reason for it and we better not just be running through the same low level encounters only now with more levels and gear. It feels like the developers of Ni No Kuni 2 rushed the game, because a lot of the backtracking involves sidequests which count towards a main quest (if that makes sense). You'll need to cross through the same canyon numerous times (which is boring), and traverse through the same areas and return to the casino area many times. I've been playing NNK2 for 15 hours, and this is all I've been doing... I like how the original NNK and other JRPGs have you come across new towns early on in the game, and have their story take you to new places to keep things feeling fresh.
